Arrest welcome, but too late: Opp.
Terming the arrest of sacked CWG Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi by the CBI as “belated”, the main Opposition BJP on Monday demanded that others whose names have been mentioned by the Prime Minister-appointed Shunglu Committee for irregularities in the CWG preparations, should also be brought to book. The
party also demanded that Mr Kalmadi should also be removed from the IOA. On the issue of DMK MP Kanimozhi being made an accused in the 2G spectrum case, the BJP asked why Tamil Nadu chief minister’s wife Dayalu Ammal, who is said to have 60 per cent in Kalaignar TV, not mentioned in the chargesheet by the CBI.
The party wondered whether there was any political bargain or political threat that prevented Ms Ammal’s name from being mentioned by the investigating agency in the chargesheet.
Welcoming the arrest of Mr Kalmadi “for corruption”, CPI(M) said though it was “much delayed”, the CBI should forthwith register cases and prosecute “those who were responsible for the expropriation of public funds”.
In his reaction, BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, who was in Mumbai, said, “This (arrest) is only the tip of the iceberg.” The CPI(M) politburo came out with a statement calling Mr Kalmadi’s arrest “belated” and “much delayed” and demanded that the CBI take steps to lodge cases and prosecute others responsible for the irregularities.
“Apart from the instances of corruption indulged in by the Organising Committee of the CWG, there is largescale misuse of funds for the Games by other agencies and authorities in the Delhi government and the central government. Some of these have been inquired into by the Shunglu Committee,” it added.
