Arunachal webcast inspires EC

The Election Commission of India is contemplating to replicate the innovative idea of live feed of polling process through the Internet demonstrated by the frontier state of Arunachal Pradesh during the 2009 parliamentary and Assembly polls.

Disclosing this at Itangar on Saturday, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla told reporters that the commission has taken note of the noble idea of brining in more transparency by using the Internet and it would try to apply this method in other parts of the country depending on the need.
The then deputy commissioner of Tirap district Ankur Garg and his wife Swati Sharma Garg, who was the deputy commissioner of West Kameng district, have introduced the innovative model by putting live feed of polling Internet during the 2009 parliamentary and Assembly polls in the state.
While live feed of polling was done in 13 polling stations of Tirap district out of total 163, the webcast was done in three polling stations in West Kameng out of 32. Though it was experimented on limited polling stations, the CEC looked impressed.
“The commission is going to use this example of Arunachal Pradesh as a model for the whole country,” said Mr Chawla.
