Ashok won’t be in Chavan team

Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan will not be inducted into the Prithviraj Chavan Cabinet to be expanded any time in the next week. This was made clear by the party on Sunday night.

Mr Ashok Chavan, who was removed from the chief ministership following the Adarsh housing scam in Mumbai, is keen for his political rehabilitation and is said to have started lobbying for it. He also met chief minister in this regard. But the party is not sympathetic towards him not because of the Adarsh scam but the allegations he has been facing in the “paid news” case which is before the Election Commission. Mr Ashok Chavan got excessive publicity and the identical write ups in different newspapers during the Maharashta Assembly elections held last year. He also undertook the image building exercise in the past few months. But this had not helped him politically and even his own Marathawada region refuses to back him at this juncture.
But his “well wishers” in New Delhi are confident of his early rehabilitation either in the AICC or in the government.
Meanwhile, Mr Prithviraj Chavan who has been camping here for last few days to short list his team for the Cabinet, is said to have not submitted his list of Congress ministers before the high command. He is expected to meet the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, defence minister and the AICC in-charge of the party affaris in Maharashtra A.K. Antony on Monday.
The chief minister is in search of party legislators with clean image and those who can deliver but he has limited scope. If the insiders are to be believed, he would have to retain 80 per cent leaders who were in the Ashok Chavan government.
It will be interesting to see whether his team would be better than the NCP’s team in the government or caste, gender and regional factors would compel him to compromise with the merit.
Meanwhile, the Congress aspirants are camping here to lobby for their induction in the Cabinet for last few days. This has made the Maharashtra Sadan the centre of political activities.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
