Ashoka Chakra for AP cop killed by Maoists in forest
Hyderabad: A reserve sub-inspector of police K.L.V.S.S.N. Vara Prasad Babu who was killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh forests was conferred the Ashok Chakra — the highest gallantry award — posthumously.
Prasad, a reserve inspector in the Greyhounds, the elite anti-naxal force, was killed by Maoists in April 2013 after the police gunned down nine Maoists.
Prasad was caught by Maoists after he lost his way in the forest and the chopper couldn’t pick him up after the operation. Out of the six commandos who couldn’t make their way to the chopper five walked to safety.
Prasad is a native of Marturu village near Anakapalle in Vishakapat-nam district. He was hailed as a hero by locals.
K.L.V.S.S.N. Vara Prasad Babu, a son of retired constable K. Venkataramaiah joined the department in 2004 as reserve sub-inspector and was later promoted.
S. Gopal Reddy an IPS officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre, working in the state on deputation, received the President’s police medal for his distinguished service.
In other awards, Mr Gopal Reddy, while working in Jammu and Kashmir police telecommunications helped in intercepting the cryptic messages of terror organisations, in decoding them, and in successfully conductiong operations against terrorists.
In 1997, when cross-border terrorism was at its peak, he played a key-role in evacuating civilians to safer places while working as SP Kargil. He was also involved in curbing timber smuggling.
The ministry of home affairs has announced a President’s police medal for distinguished service for additional DG T.A. Tripati, Dr B.L. Meena, additional SP and R. Ravinder Reddy.
The police medal for meritorious service was announced for Nizamabad Range DIG Anil Kumar, counter Intelligence cell DIG Madhusudhan Reddy, APTransco Joint MD Y. Nagi Reddy, director of enforcement of excise D.S. Chaudhan, joint CP (security) S.K. Jain, director Finger Print Bureau V. Somasekhar Reddy, additional SP A. Pradeep Reddy. U. Ravi Prakash, DSPs B. Srinivasulu, K.V. Rama Narsimha Reddy of Madhapur. Chittoor-based cop Murali was also selected for the President award.
