In Assam, Diggy struggles to douse fire
AICC general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in Assam Digvijay Singh on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of reviewing the list of Congress nominees for the ensuing Assembly elections in Assam.
Admitting that a few complaints have come against two-three candidates, Mr Singh told reporters that party leaders were trying to settle it amicably through discussion.
Mr Singh, who faced stiff opposition of party workers at the Congress headquarters here, told reporters that such opposition is not going to affect him. “We shall look into complaints only on the basis of merits,” he said, even as hundreds of party workers shouted slogan like “Digvijay Singh go back”.
Mr Singh also rejected the charges of Congress tickets being sold by members of the election committee.
He said, “We need specific names of those who have taken money, who paid the money and to whom the money was paid for party tickets in the state. It is very easy to level baseless charges.”
Mr Singh hoped the party would succeed in convincing the angry party workers to channelise their energy to ensure victory for the party.
“There is nothing unusual. In every election people who fail to get the nomination organise protests,” he said, appealing to angry party workers to forget the past and start working to ensure the victory of party candidates to form the Congress government for the third consecutive term.
Reacting to the supporters of Assam Women Congress president Sarifa Begum, Mr Singh said, “She was given nomination in 2006 election but she failed to get the votes.”
About party ticket given to charge-sheeted candidates, Mr Singh said, “Jurisprudence of law says — all people are innocent until proved guilty.”
