Assam Opp. awaits Cong candidate list
The All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has finalised the list of candidates for 84 Assembly segments, but delayed its declaration saying that it was waiting for the ruling Congress Party to announce its nominee for the Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) of Barak Valley, North Bank and the Upper Assam districts, which are
going for elections in the first phase on April 4. The Opposition BJP was also holding the list of candidates for at least 16 Assembly segments. The insiders said that party was reluctant to open its card before ruling Congress Party declares its list of candidates.
AIUDF media secretary Haider Hussain Bora said that the top leadership of the party had several rounds of meeting with the election committee of the party and assessed the position of the party in 84 Assembly segments which party is going to contest.
They decided to wait for the Congress’ list of nominees before announcing the AIUDF candidates for those constituencies, Mr Bora said. Meanwhile, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is also giving a final touch to its last list of candidates, which is likely to be announced on Friday.
AGP spokesman Apurba Bhattacharjee told this newspaper that the election committee of the party was meeting since morning to finalise the fourth list of party nominees.
The party has to finalise its list of nominees for 54 LACs now. It has already announced the names of its nominees for 70 LACs.
The party has entered into an electoral understanding with the Gana Shakti by sharing two seats Jonai and Majuli LACs. The AGP will also have electoral understanding with the Bodoland People’s Progressive Front (BPPF) and the United Democratic People’s Front.
