Assam Opp. for probe on leaders’ payments to Ulfa
Cutting across partyline the entire Opposition — the Asom Gana Parishad, Bharatiya Janata Party and All-India United Democratic Front — has demanded a high-level investigation into the alleged payment of `15 crores to the outlawed Ulfa by few politicians during the 33rd National Games held in Assam.
Former chief minister and president of Asom Gana Parishad Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, reacting to news report published in this newspaper on September 4, “Assam: Nexus of Rebels, politicians worries Intel” in which former special director of the Intelligence Bureau R.N. Ravi said that an amount of `15 crores was paid to the Ulfa to “buy peace” when the banned outfit had called to boycott the national games in the state, said, “Prime Minister should intervene and institute a high-level investigation by sitting judge of the Supreme Court into the charges of paying money to Ulfa.”
Asserting that his party was going to take up this issue at the highest level and if necessary may move the court also, Mr Mahanta said, “If common man can be punished for having links with the Ulfa, people in the government should also face the law of the land for their anti-social behavior.”
He also pointed out that former special director of the IB has stated that “credible evidence” of this unholy transaction was available with the home ministry.
