Assam pubs to be shut by 10.30 pm?
The National Commission of Women is all set to recommend closing down of the pubs in Assam by 10.30 pm. NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma will meet Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday to press for some of the measures recommended by the fact-finding committee. The recommendation comes in the wake of the molestation of a girl by a mob in Guwahati on July 9. The NCW also wants police posting in front of bars in Assam.
“We will share the recommendations with the CM. The fact-finding committee has recommended that pubs be closed by 10:30 pm. We have also recommended sensitisation of the local people so that such cases are not repeated,” Ms Sharma told this newspaper.
The preliminary report by the three-member committee of the NCW was submitted to the women and child development (WCD) minister Krishna Tirath, home ministry and the PMO on Tuesday.
Ms Sharma further said that she would not be setting up another committee to look into the case, following the removal of Alka Lamba from the fact-finding team. The NCW chairperson removed Ms Lamba from the committee for naming the victim.
However, on the report submitted by the team which included Ms Lamba, the NCW chairperson said that it was “valid and has been sent to the concerned. There is no need to send another committee as the NCW members were also involved in it.” Ms Tirath said that putting Ms Lamba in the inquiry committee was a “big mistake” by the NCW.
