Assam tea estate manager abducted for extortion
Even after intervention of Prime Minister’s Office, an assistant manager of Corramore Tea Estate, which is owned by Williamson Magor Group, was abducted by suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) rebels from Udalguri area of Bodoland Territorial Council.
Police said that incident took place on Thursday night when assistant manager Abhijit Chetia was going towards his factory. The armed rebels stopped the car in which Mr Chetia was travelling to his official residence. The armed militants took away Mr Chetia on their motorcycle, police said admitting that incident has created panic among the executives of nearby tea gardens also.
Police said that I.K. Songbijit faction of NDFB is suspected to have been involved in abduction of Mr Chetia, who is from Tingkhong in Upper Assam’s Dibrigarh district.
Though, executives of the compnay were tight-lipped and denied to have received any extortion threat, security sources said that since July 5, this was 11th incident of kidnapping in the BTC area by anti-talk faction of NDFB.
Pointing out that most of the victims were released after ransom was paid, security sources said that most of the companies and tea garden officials are reluctant to work in the tea gardens of the BTC and its adjoining areas.
The spurt in cases of abduction and extortion in BTC had attracted attention of the Prime Minister’s Office.
