Assault on policemen: Southern Command assures strict action
The Southern Command authorities on Monday said no case of indiscipline will be tolerated and strict action will be taken against those involved in the incident in which two Army personnel allegedly assaulted traffic cops here following an altercation.
"The Southern Command authorities will not tolerate any case of indiscipline and strict action will be taken against those found involved," a Southern Command spokesman told agencies when asked about the incident last night, in a busy square in the city which saw a high drama after a traffic cop stopped two jawans of College of Military Engineering (CME) for entering a 'no entry' zone.
The Southern Command spokesman further said 'normal procedure will be followed before taking any action in the matter'.
He clarified that the GOC-in-C Lt Gen A K Singh had not issued any official statement in connection with the incident.
Enraged over the traffic constable's action, a group of CME jawans, allegedly vandalised a chowki in the Sambhaji bridge area and assaulted policemen including two women constables as well as some cameramen who tried to take pictures.
Top officers of CME and military police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control after an hour long trouble at the arterial road that created tension in the area.
