Authorities restore memorial damaged in Mumbai violence
Authorities have restored the vandalised Amar Jawan Jyoti, a memorial dedicated to martyred soldiers, which was recently damaged by rioters in here recently.
Mumbai turned into fortress last Saturday after protests organised by Muslim organisations in the wake of recent ethnic clashes in Myanmar and Assam turned violent, claiming two lives and injuring 55 others.
Lauding the government's initiative on Wednesday, tourists respected Maharashtra's spirit of overcoming fear.
"We are a group of 10-12 friends and have especially come from Bhopal (provincial capital of central India's Madhya Pradesh state) to see the damage done here and also if people feel unsafe in the city. However the security arrangements seem upto the mark and everyone is roaming here without any tension. I am very happy to see that the city has coped up with major violence that rocked it," said Anurag Yadav, a tourist.
Others urged the youth to follow the footsteps of the freedom fighters who laid their lives for the country.
"We wish that our generation should work towards protecting the country. Our freedom fighters fought for our pride and we should continuously work towards protecting it," said Sandeep Rathore, a resident of the city.
A huge gathering of protesters wreaked havoc at Azad Maidan, hurling stones and attacking police officers with canes. Police vehicles were also targeted.
The demonstrators set fire to vehicles and damaged buses, prompting police to fire in the air, according to local media.
The violence in Assam ignited on July 20 when unidentified men killed four youths in Kokrajhar district, according to police and district officials.
In retaliation, armed members of the Bodo community attacked Muslims whom they suspected were behind the killings.
In recent years, Hindu and Christian tribes have vented strong anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment against Bangladeshi settlers.
Earlier, in Myanmar's Rakhine state, longstanding tensions between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas boiled over early last month, resulting in a series of arson and machete attacks in which 77 people were killed and more than 100 wounded.
