Aviation meet: India to focus on terror threats
India will discuss terror threats — such as hijacking and attempted bombing of aircraft — to the aviation sector as well as an “aviation security roadmap” with countries that include Pakistan and Afghanistan at a five-day regional aviation security conference being hosted by the Indian government in New Delhi from February 14 to
February 18. The conference will be hosted under the aegis of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and will review the extent of compliance by member states of various ICAO security declarations. Significantly, the conference will discuss recent developments and also the “risks” facing aviation security.
The conference aims to develop an “aviation security roadmap” for states to “counter and prevent acts of unlawful interference against international civil aviation”. These include threats such as hijacking or attempts by terrorists to detonate aircraft mid-air. The conference will also discuss ways in which to tackle these threats in cooperation with member states. “A key element of the roadmap should be an agreement on a plan to provide aviation security assistance to states,” the civil aviation ministry stated on Friday.
Other participating countries include Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Nepal, Maldives, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Bhutan. There will also be representation from the US and UK apart from ICAO, IATA, Airports Council International and the European Civil Aviation Conference.
Ironically, the Indian aviation sector has been facing terror threats for the past several years from Pakistan-based terrorist organisations.
