Azad looks into H1N1 situation
With a resurgence in cases of H1N1 this Monsoon, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Wednesday reviewed the situation in various states and asked them to ensure vaccination of people at risk.
Mr Azad held a meeting with health secretary Sujatha Rao, ICMR Director General V.M. Katoch, Director General of health services R.K. Srivastava and Drug Controller General of India Surinder Singh.
He also spoke with the chief ministers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Orissa and Delhi.
The Union health minister asked them to review the situation and told them that the vaccines which have been sent to them should be utilised properly, official sources said. He assured them that the Centre is willing to send them whatever assistance is required.
Mr Azad also asked the DGCI to ensure that private companies keep the vaccines adequately available in the market.
The deadly H1N1 seems to have made a comeback with a vengeance in the country with a whopping 83 deaths due to the disease being reported in the week ending August 8.
Maharashtra reported the maximum number of 51 deaths, 12 were reported from Karnataka and 6 from Andhra Pradesh. Seven deaths were reported from Gujarat and one each from West Bengal, Goa and Uttar Pradesh. Till date, samples from 1,54,259 people have been tested for influenza A H1N1. —PTI
