Azam’s ‘varsity’ set to open soon
The Maulana Mohammed Ali Jauhar University at Rampur is all set to become fully functional form the next academic session in July.
The university, which is the dream project of senior SP minister Mohd. Azam Khan, has been facing turbulent weather since the past seven years but the minister is now busy trying to tie up loose ends so that the university can function from a new academic session.
“We are making all possible arrangements regarding the law related to Jauhar University so that it is not affected by court orders. There will be amendments in the proposed act. The bill will be passed in form of an act. It will be passed in the assembly session in May,” Mr Azam Khan told this correspondent.
Officials in the higher education department are studying all possible references so that the proposed Jauhar University Act is flawless.
“The bill will take care of every aspect, leaving no room for any objection. All details are being taken care of,” said a senior official in the higher education department.
The Jauhar University was conceived by Mohd Azam Khan during the previous Samajwadi Party regime. The project ran into rough weather when the then Governor T V Rajeshwar raised objections. Thereafter, the project was stalled in the Mayawati regime.
“The then governor T.V. Rajeshwar had deliberately stalled a bill meant for opening an university in Rampur. He withheld his assent to the bill and forwarded it to President. Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav met the governor twice to explain the issue but he refused to relent. In the Mayawati regime, opposition to the project was expected and I did not even try to get it going,” says Mr Khan.
The Jauhar University is proposed to be built at an area of nearly 300 acres.
