Back to the wall

Ending days of speculation on whether he would get anticipatory bail to avoid appearing in court in person, former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa arrived at the city civil court complex where the special court of the Lokayukta is located, flashing his trademark victory sign, albeit to an angry crowd of lawyers on Monday afternoon.

The first Karnataka chief minister to be questioned in court, Yeddyurappa, who was in the courtroom for an hour, had tried to pre-empt moves to arrest him by applying for bail.

The Karnataka High Court had dismissed the former chief minister's plea for anticipatory bail in the first set of summons by the Lokayukta court early on Monday, making it mandatory for him to appear before it in the afternoon.

The hearing of two other corruption cases against BSY over denotification of land by his government, has been adjourned to September 7. Ravi B. Naik, the counsel appearing for Yeddyurappa and his family, moved bail applications in the two cases. His sons and son-in-law are co-accused in one of the cases.

The high court on Monday adjourned to September 5, the hearing on an anticipatory bail plea filed by former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in the case filed by JD(S) leader Y.S.V. Datta, alleging irregularities in the allotment of tenders for the Upper Bhadra project.

Yeddyurappa, who stepped out of Sagar Hospital earlier in the day, first drove to Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple in Chamarajpet before going home.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
