Bail for LaMarts teachers extended
The city sessions court on Friday extended the bail of the principal of the La Martiniere for Boys and three teachers in connection with the death of 13-year-old student Rouvanjit Rawla. The court will decide in its next hearing on February 17 whether more serious should be framed in the case.
The four accused teachers, including principal Sunirmal Chakravarthi appeared in the city sessions court of chief judge Dipak Saha Roy for confirmation of the bail which they were earlier granted by the chief metropolitan magistrate’s (CMM) court. Judge Saha Roy said that he did not find any reason to cancel the bail granted by the CMM court. “The accused are allowed to remain on bail till further orders,” he said.
School secretary Supriyo Dhar said they were happy with the observation of the court. “The governing body, teachers and even the students were anxious. The teachers will not have to appear in the court for the hearing,” he added.
Rouvanjit, a Class 8 student hanged himself on February 12, 2010, after being caned by the principal and three other teachers. After his father Ajay Rawla lodged a complaint with the Shakespeare police station accusing the principal and the three teachers of abetment to his son’s suicide, the police had arrested the teachers on October 4, 2010, who were granted bail on that very day.
