Bail or jail, Kani fate to be decided today
With the DMK having been routed in the Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, political pundits are keen to know what fate awaits Rajya Sabha MP and DMK chief Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi when the order on her bail plea is pronounced on Saturday. Will she be arrested or not?
The CBI in its supplementary chargesheet on April 25 filed in a special court in the 2G spectrum case named Kanimozhi a co-conspirator in the multi-million crore scam. The Patiala House court special judge said the order on bail pleas of Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar would be pronounced on May 14.
Filing the 48-page charge-sheet, the CBI, besides Kanimozhi, also charged Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar, Karim Morani of Cineyug Films, Rajiv Agarwal of Kusegaon Realty and Asif Balwa (brother of Shahid Usman Balwa).
The CBI probe into the 2G spectrum scam has revealed the transfer of `200 crores to Chennai-based Kalaignar TV, allegedly by a company linked to Shahid Balwa.
The CBI said, “Investigation by the CBI has established that accused A. Raja (former telecom minister), Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar, both stakeholders in Kalaignar TV, accepted and received an illegal gratification of `200 crores in Chennai-based TV channel from an other accused Shahid Balwa”.
“The transfer of `200 crores by Dynamix Realty to Chennai-based Kalaignar TV, through Cineyug Films, was not a ‘genuine business transaction’ but ‘it was in the nature of illegal gratification’ paid in lieu of the spectrum licences given by Raja to Balwa’s Swan Telecom”, said the chargesheet.
