Ban on bulk SMSes for 72 hours
The department of telecommunications on Wednesday banned bulk SMS and MMS services across the country for the next 72 hours as a preventive measure to halt the spreading of rumours by mischief-mongers over the Ayodhya title suit verdict expected on Friday.
This is the first time bulk messages have been stop-ped throughout the country.
All mobile phone operators have been directed to halt bulk messages with immediate effect. This, however, will not prevent individuals sending SMSes to each other. The decision was taken on the advice of the home ministry, which feared that miscreants could use such a facility to foment communal violence after the verdict on Friday. Uni-on home minister P. Chi-dambaram on Wednesday also made an appeal for peace across the country.
