Bandh hits coal production in Singareni
The mining operations at the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) spread over four districts — Khammam, Warangal, Karimnagar and Adilabad — were affected on Tuesday due to the day-long bandh call given by trade unions to protest against price rise, violation of labour laws and disinvestment of Public Sector Units(PSUs).
Raising slogans against the United Progressive Alliance Government's economic
policies and the spiralling prices, the miners in Singareni Collieries voluntarily
boycotted works.
The labourers observed bandh under the Congress affiliated Indian National Trade Union Congress. Following their bandh call, the coal production in Bellampalli, Manchiryala, Mandamarri and Bhupalpalli divisions have been affected.
The labourers demanded that the government make concentrated efforts to bring down
the prices of essential commodities.
They also criticised the Centre’s move to disinvest profit making Public Sector Units and termed it as a ‘sign of inefficiency on part of the Central government.’
The union members also appealed to government to take steps to stop violation of
labour laws, job losses and contractualisation of service in the country.
The union members threatened to intensify their stir, if the government did not allot 25 per cent ownership to employees in the disinvestment process.
