Bangaru back in limelight
BJP chief Nitin Gadkari on Friday brought back tainted saffron leader, Mr Bangaru Laxman, in an active role in the organisation. Former BJP chief Mr Laxman was forced to resign from the party after he was caught accepting bribe on camera. A corruption case against him is still pending in the court. The expulsion was later revoked, but Mr
Laxman was kept in the sidelines. Mr Laxman has been given a crucial post and made election in-charge of Tamil Nadu. The much-awaited list of BJP in-charges of various states and party cells was declared on Friday, seven months after Mr Gadkari took over as president. Mr Gadkari also promoted party secretary and it’s youth leader, Mr Varun Gandhi, by appointing him as election in-charge of Assam, always a crucial state for the BJP. Eyebrows were raised following Mr Gadkari’s decision to keep heavyweights like Mr Arun Jaitley and Mr M. Venkaiah Naidu away from Uttar Pradesh. Despite being one of the crucial states for the party, Mr Gadkari appointed some lightweight leaders as in-charge of UP. The star struck BJP president also brought in yesteryears ‘dream girl’ and party vice-president, Ms Hema Malini as the head of the BJP’s cultural cell. A section within the party is unhappy with the recent appointments. This section is of the view that party chief overlooked “deserving candidates” for important posts.
“Hema Malini has not attended a single party meeting in Delhi. Why was she appointed in-charge of the cultural cell. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi is the party’s vice-president and used to handle election management. He should have assigned something bigger other than handling programmes and tours of party leaders. In UP, the party has appointed lightweight in-charges when elections are due in next two years,” said a senior party functionary.
