Bardhan stresses on Left unity
CPI leader A.B. Bardhan has emphasised the need for setting up an “institutional” mechanism for strengthening ties between CPI and CPI(M) and other left parties.
Making a fervent call for Left unity at the inaugural session of the 20th national meet of the CPI (M) on Wednesday, Mr Bardhan said Left unity would not gain momentum without closer ties between CPI and CPI(M).
Amid differences, perceptions of the two parties were getting more and more similar and identical, Mr Bardhan said.
Just like CPI(M) desire for own growth, the CPI also had the right to desire its own growth, Mr Bardhan said, adding that this did not mean competition between the two parties.
Occasional meetings between general secretaries of the two communist parties or a meeting of other Left parties alone would not strengthen Left unity. Mr Bardhan said the Left parties had to provide a political alternative to Congress-led UPA and BJP-led NDA, both representing the same class interests.

CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat may have assured full support to the West Bengal unit to fight Trinamul Congress violence, but the Marxists would require much more than assurance and most definitely a deft political strategy to counter Mamata Banerjee’s social engineering agenda.
At the opening session of the Congress, Mr Karat said the CPI(M) in Bengal had a mass base of millions and it could not be cowed down by violence and repression.
While political observers agree with Mr Karat’s confidence in the organisation, they say the fight with Trinamul is not just restricted defending to physical attacks but also ideological onslaught.
With panchayat polls round the corner, they felt that the party had a tougher task at hand, especially with Ms Banerjee going around and announcing sops for various sections.
