BCCI bans 5 players over ‘fixing’ sting
Cracking the whip on players allegedly implicated in match-fixing, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday imposed tough penalties on five domestic players who were caught in a “sting operation” related to spot-fixing.
Madhya Pradesh pacer T.P. Sudhindra was banned for life while lesser punishments were given to four others, all of whom were exposed in a television programme last month.
The BCCI’s disciplinary committee, headed by president N. Srinivasan, met here in the day to discuss the report submitted by the board’s anti-corruption unit chief Ravi Sawani on the matter.
The ban effectively means an end to 28-year-old Sudhindra’s career as he was found guilty of receiving a consideration to spot fix in a domestic game.
Uttar Pradesh left-arm pacer Shalab Srivastava was handed a five-year ban “for agreeing to and negotiating terms to fix a match” while Abhinav Bali (Himachal Pradesh), Amit Yadav (Goa) and Mohnish Mishra (Madhya Pradesh) were banned for a year each “for bringing the game into disrepute through loose talk and unsubstantiated bragging”.
The punishments came into effect retrospectively, from May 15, the date on which the Indian Premier League governing council first suspended the five players.
The BCCI committee said that neither Sudhindra nor Srivastava would be entitled to monthly payments, benevolent fund, benefit match or any other facility, nor can they hold positions in any cricket association affiliated to the BCCI for the period of their bans.
