BCCI expels Lalit Modi after plea for stay rejected
It took just over 10 minutes for the Indian cricket board to slap a life ban on Lalit Modi, architect of the Indian Premier League, at the BCCI’s special general meeting chaired by N. Srinivasan here on Wednesday. The former IPL chairman, who faced various charges including financial irregularities and misappropriation during his 2008-10 stint, found no support at the meeting. He was unanimously expelled from the BCCI within minutes of the Supreme Court dismissing his petition seeking a stay on the meeting.
Of 29 members present (Jammu and Kashmir was the only association to skip the meeting), no one objected to the resolution proposed by Haryana’s Anirudh Chaudhary and seconded by Orissa’s Ranjib Biswal. The Punjab Cricket Association, of which Mr Modi is a former vice-president, was conspicuously silent. It was represented by secretary M.P. Pandove instead of president I.S. Bindra, the lone dissenting voice and Mr Modi’s supporter in the cricket board.
