Having decided to allow its two marines to scoot from a trial under the Indian justice system, Italy has now issued a travel advisory for its citizens asking them to be prudent, cautious and vigilant while travelling in India, and particularly in Kerala.
In Italy, the SNDMAE (National Union of Employees of the ministry of foreign affairs) accused India of holding the Italian ambassador “hostage”.
According to Italian press reports, the employees’ union also maintained that the move to “limit its (ambassador’s) possibilities of movement” contrasts clearly with the provisions of Articles 29, 31 and 44 of the Vienna Convention.
The reaction comes in response to the government issuing a countrywide alert on Friday to prevent the Italian ambassador from leaving India after a Supreme Court order.
The EU, of which Italy is a member, is hoping for a “common solution” that is “mutually acceptable” to resolve their dispute. The EU has been kept informed of developments concerning Italy by India.
Italian President Giorgio Napolitano was quoted by agencies as saying on Friday that his country is “working on a friendly agreement with India based on international law”.
