Beam falls at monorail site in Mumbai, 2 die
Sites of construction of the infrastructure projects of the city seem to be pretty dangerous sites, if the recent spate of accidents on these sites is anything to go by. On Friday evening, two people died and three injured when a guideway beam fell from one of the supports of the under-construction monorail at Chembur.
The incident occurred at around 6.30 pm on Friday, when the curvature guideway beam, the base on which the monorail runs at a turn, was being put up on the support pillars in front of DR container at RCF Road near Mysore Colony, Chembur. One of the supports failed, and the beam toppled over on its side.
One of the labourers at the site was crushed beneath the 65-tonne beam, while another lost his balance and fell off the pillar onto the road; this also indicates that no harness was given to the labourer, in violation of the rules. They have been identified as Baldev Singh (45) and Dinesh Kumar (22), and they died on the spot.
The three injured labourers were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital with multiple injuries to their hands and legs.
