Beaten by teacher, student hangs self
Anuj, 16, a standard XI student of a school at Udumal-pet in Coimbatore district, committed suicide Wednes-day allegedly after he was beaten up by a teacher.
Anuj was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his hostel room. His suicide note said the economics teacher beat him up and humiliated him before his entire classroom.
Superintendent of police V. Balakrishnan said there were no external injuries on Anju’s body but it appeared he and three others had been beaten up.
He said initial probe had revealed the school was fleecing students on the pretext of special classes and its teachers were resorting to banned corporal punishment.
Police would take the teacher and the school management to task for abetting suicide and for extortion, he said.
Tirupur Police has warned managements not conducting periodic parent-teacher meetings of stringent action. If a management fails to hold such meets, it would be held responsible for any untoward happenings at the school, Mr Balakrishnan said.
The same school was in news last week after a students fell off its parapet wall. A parent said teachers of the school were brutal in handling students.
He claimed a student was tied to a flag post recently and whipped in front of the entire school during a prayer meet because a teacher found a cigarette stub in his hostel room.
