Bedi commission absolves Omar Abdullah
A one-man judicial commission probing the custodial death of a ruling National Conference (NC) activist here in September 2011 has exonerated chief minister Omar Abdullah of all accusations levelled by the deceased’s family and seized by the Opposition to run him down.
The 96-page report of Justice (retired) H.S. Bedi rules out any foul play in the death of Haji Syed Muhammad Yusuf Shah soon after the chief minister had handed him over to the crime branch of the state police to take up investigations into a buying-off case.
The report submitted to the state’s law secretary G.H. Tantray in winter capital Jammu on Saturday 2011 says he died due to cardiovascular arrest. A magisterial probe into the mysterious death of Mr. Shah had arrived at similar conclusion earlier.
The Bedi Commission’s affirmation is seen as a major relief to the chief minister who was under attack of the Opposition which, and also the family of the deceased, had alleged that the NC activist died as a result of severe beating by his personal staff and even pointed finger at Mr. Abdullah and his minister of state for home Nasir Aslam Wani.
The report says, “On a cumulative assessment of the evidence on record it must be found that the death was caused by myocardial infarction (heart attack) which as Dr Noor says would mean a ‘heart attack’ and that no suspicious circumstances can be spelt out.” “The deceased had been in fact arrested on September 29, 2011.”
