Beleaguered DMK family reunites at Tihar
A beleaguered Karunanidhi family — a daughter in jail for alleged involvement in the 2G scam and a debacle in the recently-held TN Assembly polls — appears to have brought together the divided family. The family put up a show of solidarity on Monday as Kanthi, the wife of Karunanidhi’s elder son, M.K. Alagiri, went to meet his jailed step
-sister Kanimozhi at the Patiala House Courts where she had been produced.
It was followed by an emotional meeting of the octogenarian DMK leader with his daughter at the capital’s Tihar Jail in the evening. Ms Kanimozhi’s other step-brother M.K. Stalin is expected to arrive in Delhi on Tuesday to meet Ms Kanimozhi in Tihar.
According to DMK sources, six persons apart from the wheel-chair bound DMK leader entered the jail premises. Among the six were Karunanidhi’s third wife and the mother of Ms Kanimozhi, Rajathi Ammal, Ms Kanimozhi’s husband Aravindan, senior DMK leader T.R. Baalu, former ministers in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet Durai Murugan and Ponmudi and DMK MP A.K.S. Vijayan. While Mr Baalu and Mr Vijayan were asked to wait outside the building, Mr Duarimurugan and Mr Ponmudi were asked to sit in a room adjacent to the one where Mr Karunanidhi, his wife and Mr Aravindan met Ms Kanimozhi in the visitor’s room.
Also present in the same room for the meeting were former telecom minister A. Raja and managing director of Kalaignar TV Sharad Kumar.
All three were seated in the room before Mr Karunanidhi and family entered. What followed were scenes of an emotional reunion, said sources.
The jail meeting lasted for about 30 minutes.
