Bengal: Protester who set self on fire dies
A man, who had attempted suicide by setting himself on fire in front of the Karaya police station on December 3, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon. The local residents claimed that Mir Aminul Islam, 36, was forced to take the drastic step after he was booked in a false case “for protesting against police inaction in a rape case”. They alleged that he was falsely implicated in a robbery case along with four other local youth for pressing the police for action against their neighbour, a police informer Shahzada Bux, who had allegedly raped a local teenager for over an year.
Mir died at around 3 pm at a local hospital, said a senior officer of the Karaya police station.

Rape victim plans to sue TMC MP

The Park Street rape victim has said that she would be filing a defamation suit against Trinamul Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. Ms Dastidar had sparked a huge controversy by declaring that the Park Street incident was not a case of rape but a misunderstanding between the “lady and her clients”.
Taking strong exception to her statement, the victim said: “She had no right to call me a sex worker. I will definitely file a defamation suit against her.” The Anglo-Indian victim also voiced her unhappiness over the failure of the police in arresting two of the accused.
