‘Bengal SEC crossed limits’
Emulating party chief and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Trinamul Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday launched a scathing attack against the state election commissioner Mira Pande, alleging that she had crossed her limit.
“ We understand whose bidding she is doing and whose line she is toeing. We do not know if the CPI(M) will make her a candidate in some future election,” he said while addressing an election rally at Andal in Durgapur.
Mr Banerjee is a noted lawyer and in the Supreme Court he represented the state government during the hearing of the panchayat election case. The state BJP president Rahul Sinha said that Mr Banerjee was targeting Ms Pande on the streets because she defeated him in the legal battle in the court.
In the past, Ms Banerjee had herself repeatedly said that the previous Left Front government had extended Ms Pande’s tenure from three to six years and she was trying to return the favour by helping the CPI(M). Mukul Roy and Madan Mitra had also suggested that the state election commissioner was siding with the CPI(M). On Saturday, he claimed that the CPI(M) was trying to survive with the help of Ms Pande. Mr Mukherjee said: “Mira Pande if you have guts then facilitate CPI(M) and Congress victory in the panchayat election. We will win all the zilla parishad seats in the state.”
He also attacked her for her insistence on deployment of central para military forces for the rural polls. “She cannot live without the CRPF. She wants CRPF all round her,” he added. Mr Banerjee also did not spare former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose and North 24 Parganas leader Gautam Deb.
