Bengal wants forces to stay after polls

Apprehending that large scale political violence may break out after the announcement of the poll results on May 13, the state administration has decided to request the Centre to deploy the Central paramilitary forces for the purpose of maintaining law and order even after the elections are over. “We want that some of the companies of the Central forces should stay back in the state for at least 10 days after the announcement of the results,” a senior official of the state home department said.

The state administration is now working out on the exact requirement of the companies of the Central forces after the elections. “It may be close to 140 companies. We will formally submit the requisition to the Union ministry of home affairs once we freeze this number,” the official added.
The state government has also taken up the issue with the Election Commission. Sources at the EC said that the commission has already recommended to the Centre that some companies of the Central forces should stay back in the state after the announcement of the poll results.
According to the intelligence inputs which has been received by the state administration, the political violence and the law and order problem will increase after the elections by manifold. “Now the situation is largely peaceful and the law and order situation is very much under the control mainly due to the presence of the large contingent of the Central forces across the state. Whatever be the poll results, we anticipate an increase in the incidents of political violence post May 13 and to tackle the situation the Central forces should stay back in the state for some more days,” a senior police official said.
