Bhopal gas victims rue injustice one year after CJM verdict

The Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangthan on Tuesday alleged that nothing has been done for the victims of the 1984 gas disaster even one year after the chief judicial magistrate delivered the verdict.

Thousands were killed in the incident termed as the world’s worst industrial disaster when poisonous fumes leaked from the Union carbide plant in Bhopal in December 1984.

Meanwhile, the convener of the organisation, Abdul Jabbar, told reporters that the manner in which the case was being handled by the CBI is best exemplified by the fact that even till now, the sessions court has not been given a certified copy of the CJM’s judgement.

The court of chief judicial magistrate in its June 2010 verdict had convicted seven Indians, all former employees of US chemical firm Union carbide, of negligence and sentenced them to two years in jail.

Jabbar said that even after the CJM judgement, the case has been dragging in Supreme Court as the Union carbide went into appeal against it adding that there was no hope left for the gas victims and they will continue to be resigned to their fates.
