Big fraud in city MWG

New Delhi, Aug. 20: The Comptroller and Auditor General detected financial irregularities in the conduct of the Military World Games at Hyderabad in October, 2007.

In a report, the CAG has slammed the Services Sports Control Board (of the Armed Forces) for not obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for the entire expenditure of the Games. The CAG found that the SSCB took the approval of the MoD only for Rs 50 crore as against an estimate of Rs 138 crore for the Games.

“Funding for the Military World Games, 2007, organised by the SSCB, violated financial rules and regulations,” the CAG report noted. The CAG pointed out that projects exceeding Rs 100 crore required the approval of the Cabinet.

“Although the SSCB required funds in excess of Rs 100 crore for the conduct of the MWG, a proposal was put up to the ministry for only Rs 40 crore by omitting work services,” said the report. Later, the works services were sanctioned through 37 piecemeal sanctions costing Rs 78 crore. The CAG report also pointed out that money received from the sponsors totalling Rs 84 lakh was spent by the SSCB without the sanction of the ministry.
