Big stir against Mamata
In what should serve as a wake-up call for the Mamata Banerjee government, the civil society on Friday hit the streets of Kolkata, protesting against its failure to check the rise in crime against women and the chief minister’s style of functioning.
The huge rally, which started from College Square and culminated at Metro Channel, bore an eerie resemblance to the rally that was organised six years ago, in protest of the Nandigram mayhem. In November 14, 2007, the then Left Front government did not pay heed to the vox populi and had paid a price later. The Nandigram protests are believed to have played a major role in the ouster of the Left Front and the reception of Ms Banerjee as the chief minister.
Like the Nandigram rally, Friday’s rally too was called by prominent writers, film makers, intellectuals et al. Thousands of people from all walks of life, including women and young girls participated in the rally and voiced their anger over the state of affairs. “Didi should think why there is such a disillusionment among the people with her government only within two years,” painter Samir Aich said.
Members of the civil society, rights organisations and members of various women’s forum on Friday marched through the streets of Kolkata, protesting atrocities on women and a recent spate of rape cases in West Bengal.
