Bihar: Cash seized from candidates
Four incidents of the suspected use of money to influence voters surfaced a day before the Assembly polls begin in Bihar. Unaccounted-for money was recovered from the vehicles of a BJP candidate and two LJP candidates by the police on Thursday and five people were arrested in this connection.
Cash worth `2.32 lakh was seized from a campaign vehicle allegedly belonging to the BJP’s candidate for Gaighat Assembly constituency, Veena Devi. The police lodged an FIR in this connection and named a supporter of Veena Devi’s, said sources. The money was suspected to be transported for use to unduly influence voters.
The LJP’s candidate for Benipatti constituency in Madhubani district, Sajjan Singh, was detained by the police and four of his supporters were arrested allegedly during the very act of distributing cash to voters. Cash worth `5,000 was recovered from the supporters of Singh, considered to be a politician having both money and muscle power.
