Bihar MP Digvijay dies in London
Former Union minister and sitting Independent MP from Banka in Bihar Digvijay Singh died on Thursday following a brain haemorrhage. The 55-year old leader was admitted at a hospital in London.
Mr Singh, who was minister of state for external affairs in the Atal Behari Vajpayee government, had gone to London along with the Commonwealth shooting team recently, when he suffered a heart attack.
He was admitted to St Thomas hospital there where he suffered a brain haemorrhage.
Mr Singh is survived by his wife and two daughters. The leader’s wife and his elder daughter were with him during the treatment at the London hospital.
A five-time Member of Parliament, Mr Singh was at present representing Banka constituency in the Lok Sabha as an independent. He was earlier elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998 and 1999. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1990 and 2004.
Considered to be very close to former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, Mr Singh had also served as minister of state for railways and MoS for external affairs in his government.
He had fought the last Lok Sabha election as Independent, as he was denied ticket by JD(U). Mr Singh, who belonged to Rajput community in Bihar, had fallen out with chief minister Nitish Kumar before the last general elections.
Condoling his death Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, Mr Singh was a “widely respected leader”. In communication to his wife Dr Singh said, “He excelled as a minister in the central government, showing remarkable administrative acumen.”
JD(U) general secretary and spokesperson Shivanand Tewari said, Mr Singh was active in politics since his student days and was also a member of Lohia Vichar Manch.
