Bihar to pay relief to wrongly jailed

The Bihar government has been directed by the state human rights commission to pay Rs 40,000 to each of ten people who were wrongly sent to jail due to shoddy investigations by the police. The ten people were jailed after fabricated charges of murder and abduction were levelled against them in two separate cases.

The commission, after examining the role of the investigating police teams and their senior officials, also recommended action against two SPs — N.H. Khan and Vikas Vaibhav. Ironically, Khan, currently posted as SP in Purnea district, got a promotion to selection grade on Tuesday, when the commission’s recommendations were sent to the state government.
Bihar DGP Neelmani said the commission’s recommendation about paying compensations would be complied with, but he was evasive about ensuring the “appropriate action” against the two erring SPs as recommended by the commission.
