Bill to amend People Act is introduced

The government on Saturday introduced the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2010 in the Rajya Sabha. The bill seeks to amend the Representation of the People Act, 1950. This bill, when passed, would enable Indians living outside the country to register their names in the electoral rolls.

There was a persistent demand by these people to allow them to participate in their home country’s democratic process. The bill was introduced by law minister M. Veerappa Moily in the Upper House. The fresh bill is aimed at providing Indians, who have not acquired the citizenship of any other country and are away, entitlements to have their names registered in the electoral rolls. Their names will figure in the constituencies in which their place of residence falls, as mentioned in the passport.
The Central government would specify, after consulting the Election Commission, the time within which the name of the persons shall be registered in the electoral rolls.
Earlier, the minister withdrew the 2006 draft of the same proposed legislation saying he was doing so as it did not have details regarding modalities on conferring voting rights to NRIs. “The fresh bill is more comprehensive,” Dr Moily said.

1st phase of oil cleanup ops finished
Mumbai, Aug. 21: The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri) on Saturday announced that it has managed to scoop up all the oil sludge, tar balls and oil stained sand from Awas Beach near Alibaug and start the bio-remediation process using its globally acclaimed Oilzapper technology.
Two cargo ships had collided off Mumbai coast, resulting in oil spill along the coast earlier this month.
Working with volunteers from National Cadet Corps, which were mobilised with the help of Sanctuary Asia magazine and PSUs like IOC, technical experts from Teri managed to scoop up oil from over a 1.2-km stretch of the beach. This oil stained sand, tar balls and sludge was then dumped into a specially created bio-remediation pit about 200 metres from the shore and the Oilzapper tech applied on it. —PTI

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
