BJP-AGP alliance likely to expand NDA fold
The BJP, which witnessed a thumping victory in the Bihar Assembly polls, is confident that its numerical strength gained in Bihar polls, can help it in increasing the NDA fold. Sources said the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which had recently snapped ties with the BJP, is sending feelers to the latter for a possible pre-poll alliance. Assembly polls are scheduled in Assam for 2011.
AGP leaders Chandramohan Patwari and Prafulla Kumar Mohanta are likely to meet Leader of Opposition, Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday.
When asked, Ms Swaraj denied that AGP leaders were coming to discuss a possible tie-up.
However, sources said the issue would be discussed between AGP leaders and Ms Swaraj. The Asom Gana Parishad leaders are also likely to request the BJP to raise the NC Hills scam.
The Bharatiya Janata Party is of the view that the 2G spectrum scam has also given it an opportunity to increase the number of its alliance partners.
NDA convenor and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav has been authorised by the coalition to talk to potential allies.
Ms Swaraj was hopeful that Asom Gana Parishad will participate in the rally against corruption.
INLD leader Om Prakash Chautala has already told Bharatiya Janata Party and JD(U) that his party will take part in the rally.
BJD, it was learnt, is also open to attending the rally.
AIADMK leader M. Thambidurai informed BJP that since party supremo J. Jayalalithaa was in Ooty, a final decision (to join the rally) will be taken only when she returns to Chennai.
