BJP expels MLA for cross-vote
Taking a tough stand on the cross-voting issue by its Jammu and Kashmir MLAs, the BJP on Tuesday expelled its legislative party member in the state Assembly Chaman Lal Gupta from the primary membership of the party for six years.
The party had earlier suspended seven MLAs, including Mr Gupta, for cross-voting and served them showcause notices.
The BJP parliamentary board, which took this decision on Tuesday, also took note of the fact that Mr Gupta, despite being suspended from the party, had issued notices to four party MLAs.
“This the parliamentary board treats as a further case of gross indiscipline and resolves to expel Mr Chamanlal Gupta,” the statement issued by the party said. The party has also communicated its decision to the state Assembly Speaker.
Earlier, the BJP central leadership had found that as the legislature party chief, Mr Gupta had failed to follow the party’s whip and had himself cross-voted during the council polls in the state, where the BJP’s own candidate got four votes last month, despite the total strength of the party at 11.
BJP chief Nitin Gadkari had held meetings with the rebel MLAs earlier also on the issue.
