BJP, JD-U corner govt on CBI role
The allegedly questionable role played by the country’s premier investigative agency, the CBI, was questioned yet again by some Opposition parties here on Tuesday. It was done in the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour by the main Opposition party, the BJP as well as the JD(U).
Raising the issue in the House, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj alleged that the CBI is being “politically misused”. She also pointed out that even though she has been demanding a discussion on the CBI in the last two sessions of Parliament and had even sent a notice seeking a debate, it had not been held.
Further, Ms Swaraj said that her party has given notice yet again seeking a discussion on the many cases of corruption that have come to light in recent weeks such as the Commonwalth Games scam and the Adarsh Housing Society scam.
She found support for her accusation from JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav who also remarked that “the trust in CBI has been shattered”. He also said that the CBI is not allowed to function independently, a fact that he was aware of since his party too had been in the government.
Mr Yadav also demanded that the CBI be made an independent body, just like the Election Commission so that corruption cases can be dealt with sternly.
