BJP leaders still want JD-U ties
As the rift grows between the BJP and JD(U) in Bihar, the BJP’s central leadership clearly indicated on Monday that it wanted the alliance to continue.
While the BJP’s state unit is demanding that the party give a befitting reply to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for showing “arrogance” by returning the Gujarat government’s relief aid, the BJP top brass is in no mood to cut off ties with its NDA ally ahead of the October-November Assembly elections.
After a series of meetings on Monday, the BJP said a final decision would be taken after its Bihar core group meets on Tuesday. BJP chief Nitin Gadkari, who arrived in New Delhi Monday evening, met NDA working chairman L.K. Advani, where senior party leaders M. Venkaiah Naidu and Ramlal were also present. Later, another top leader, Mr Shahnawaz Hussain, and Bihar BJP chief C.P. Thakur met Mr Gadkari at his residence. Mr Hussain and Dr Thakur had met Mr Advani earlier in the day.
Mr Hussain told reporters on Monday: “The potter does not want his pot to break.” This was a clear indication that despite differences with the JD(U), the party did not want to cut off ties. But Mr Hussain also stressed while the BJP wanted to work with the JD(U), it would not compromise on self-respect.
