BJP to meet July 25 on session strategy

The BJP’s parliamentary party is meeting on July 25 to chalk out its strategy for the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. The meeting of the parliamentary party’s core group, which would also be attended by leaders and deputy leaders of the Opposition of both Houses of Parliament at BJP parliamentary party chairman L.K. Advani’s residence, is likely to witness fireworks on the caste census issue. Party leaders are expected to discuss this issue during the meeting. The BJP, which was earlier supporting the caste census, went on a backfoot after the RSS asked it to rethink. The RSS is staunchly opposed to the caste census issue. Though the BJP had earlier said it supports the caste census, after the RSS asked it to reconsider on the issue, the party stands divided on the issue. Senior party leader M.M. Joshi had termed the caste census “divisive” when other senior leaders, including Ms Sushma Swaraj and Mr Gopinath Munde, had favoured this demographic exercise.
The party, meanwhile, said it will take on the UPA government on issues like price rise, “escape” of Bhopal gas tragedy accused Warren Anderson, the Manipur blockade, delay in Commonwealth Games projects, railway accidents and Indo-Pak talks in the forthcoming Parliament session. The NDA floor leaders would be meeting on July 26 to discuss issues to be taken in Parliament.
Other issues the main Opposition plans to discuss in Parliament are increasing frequency of rail accidents and deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital. On the issue of railway accidents, senior party leader Shahnawaz Hussain said home minister P. Chidambaram and railway minister Mamata Banerjee are speaking in different voices on the Sainthia rail accident. He asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to clarify the government’s position on the issue.
The BJP announced it will observe Kargil Vijay Diwas across the country on July 26. In Delhi, party chief Nitin Gadkari would lead party workers to pay their respect to the Kargil martyrs at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate.
