BJP meets PM over Nepal crisis
A BJP delegation, led by former party chief Mr Rajnath Singh on Saturday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The BJP leaders, concerned over the political situation in Nepal, sought to know from the Prime Minister the “structured view” and the policy of the government with regard to Nepal.
Mr Rajnath Singh also extended his party’s support to the government on any decision it takes with regard to relations with Nepal.
“I assured him that the BJP would back any decision taken by the central government on Nepal,” Mr Singh said after the meeting.
Mr Rajnath Singh was accompanied by former Uttarakhand chief minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari and Delhi MLA Vijay Jolly.
“As per my understanding of Nepal, I feel that the people are for democracy and a healthy democracy will lead to a prosperous Nepal,” Mr Singh said underlining the importance of having political consensus on matters of foreign policy. Political deadlock continues in the neighbouring country, following the resignation of PM Madhav Kumar Nepal on June 30 and the failure of its Parliament to elect his successor after five rounds of voting. India’s special envoy Mr Shyam Saran had gone to Nepal where he had talks with leaders to help end the political deadlock. The Maoists, who fought in a civil war until 2006, hold the largest number of seats in the parliament but not enough to govern alone.
