BJP: PM accepts failure
Reacting to the New Year message of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the main Opposition BJP has said that it is an acceptance of the fact that the government has failed to control prices, tackle Naxals and fight corruption.
BJP spokesperson Prakash Javedkar said, “Most of the time, the Prime Minister’s New Year message is a mere ritual. In a way, he has accepted for the first time that his government has failed to control prices of essential commodities, fight terrorism, take the welfare schemes to the poor and fight corruption.” Taking a dig at the government on the issue of price rise, he said, “Not even 24 hours had passed since the assurance from the Prime Minister when the government increased CNG prices.”
Dr Singh had said in his New Year message, “We will redouble our efforts to deal effectively and credibly with the challenges of inflation, cleansing our governing processes, national security and making our delivery system work for the aam aadmi.”
Pointing to the divergence of opinion within the government over the issue of Naxalism, Mr Javedkar said, “On the issue of terrorism and Naxalism, the government is playing politics and speaking in two voices. While Digvijay Singh and his friends are saying something, P. Chidambaram and others are speaking in a different language.” Hitting out at the PM for turning a blind eye to corruption, he said, “If the government wants to take on corruption head on, it should give into the Opposition demand for a JPC probe into the 2G affair. Checking corruption in his government is his constitutional responsibility.”
