BJP shocked by Pranab remarks
Expressing shock over finance minister Pranab Mukherjee’s suggestion to the Opposition parties to “join the Maoists rank” if they have no faith in parliamentary democracy, the BJP on Sunday charged the government of making “redundant” democratic institutions.
“I am shocked to read the statement of Pranabda who happens to be the leader of the House in Lok Sabha. Does the demand for a JPC amount to not having faith in parliamentary democracy and the Constitution?” Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said in a statement. Responding to a question on the disruption of the Winter Session of Parliament over the demand for a JPC probe into the 2G spectrum scam on Saturday, Mr Mukherjee had said, “The total Winter Session of Parliament was lost. It proves that the Opposition has no faith in parliamentary democracy. If they do not have faith in parliamentary democracy, they should join the Maoists.”
Ms Swaraj said, “The truth is that the government has more faith in the courts and the CBI. It is the government that is making the parliamentary institutions redundant.”

CPI denies its JPC withdrawal demand report
AGE CORRESPONDENT
New Delhi
Jan. 23: The CPI on Sunday denied reports that the party was ready to withdraw its demand for a JPC probe into the 2G spectrum scam. CPI Lok Sabha MP Gurudas Dasgupta reportedly had said on Saturday, “We are withdrawing our demand for a JPC... but for only one demand to hold up Parliament is wrong.” He said the most important issue today was the economic policies and price rise. “Parliament must meet, must discuss, Parliament hold up should not continue,” he said.
