BJP shows LK Advani his place, in shadow

New Delhi: Following hectic backroom operations, the BJP was able to tide over the crisis triggered by senior party leader L.K. Advani who put in his papers a day after Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was elevated to the post of poll panel chairman.
The bottomline of the truce was simple: Nothing much was given to Advani despite his arm-twisting tactics by resigning from key posts, but a face-saving formula was offered.
Issuing a joint statement on Tuesday evening at Advani’s residence, party president Rajnath Singh said Advani has accepted the `appeal’ of the BJP and that all concerns would be addressed. He also said the BJP has not accepted the resignation for Advani from the three posts -- Parliamentary Board, National Executive and the Election Committee.
Singh also said that Advani has accepted to guide the party. He also underlined the role played by the RSS in tiding over the crisis.
Seconds after Singh read out the statement, Modi tweeted saying he had predicted that Advani would indeed withdraw his resignation. He said he was happy at the developments.
Prominent absentee was the man in the eye of the storm: L K Advani himself. On this issue, Singh said Advani will address a press conference later.
Senior party leaders including leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Opposition leader in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, Nitin Gadkari, Anant Kumar, Uma Bharati, Jaswant Singh, Venkaiah Naidu and party spokesperson Prakesh Javedkar.
The peace formula was worked out by former BJP president Nitin Gadkiri and senior leaders Balbir Punj and S Gurumurthy.
Advani was reportedly upset at the micromanagement of the BJP affairs by the RSS.
Earlier, Rajnath Singh on made it clear that there will be no going back on the decision to appoint Narendra Modi as campaign committee chief.
His assertion came even as a host of leaders like M M Joshi, Jaswant Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Venkaiah Naidu, Gopinath Munde, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Kalraj Mishra and Gopinath Munde flocked to  Advani’s residence to persuade him to reconsider his decision, saying his “guidance” was required by the party.
There were indications that a solution was being worked out and could be announced soon.
Singh, who appointed Modi as campaign committee chairman two days back triggering Advani’s resignation, said, “Who is talking about changing the decision?... Where am I changing my decision?”
He was responding when asked by reporters in Barmer in Rajasthan whether he would remain “firm” on his decision or change it in view of Advani’s resignation.
To a question on Advani, he said, “he has been our guide, is our guide and will remain our guide.”
His assertion about not changing the decision came amid hectic efforts to persuade Advani to reconsider his decision to quit all party posts.
Amidst these efforts, Advani got backing from Jaswant Singh who said a solution should be found to the questions raised the veteran leader soon in the interest of the party as well as the nation.
Singh, considered close of Advani, also expressed hope that a solution will be found when asked whether Advani will reconsider his decision to quit.
“A solution should be found soon to the questions raised by Advani ji. This is in the interest of the party. This is in the interest of the nation,” Singh said after meeting Advani in Delhi.
BJP plunged into a crisis yesterday after Advani quit from three main party posts —— Parliamentary Board, National Executive and the Election Committee.
