BJP silent on Pak mention
A day after its national spokesperson criticised US President Barack Obama for not mentioning Pakistan while talking about terrorism, the main Opposition BJP on Sunday remained silent on the issue. The party top brass, which met on Sunday, decided to wait till Mr Obama addresses Indian Parliamentarians, to make any further statement on his visit, sources said.
A section of party leaders were not happy with spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy’s comment criticising Mr Obama. Though the issue was raised at the core group meeting held at veteran leader L.K. Advani’s residence, it was decided that no one will make any further comments on Mr Obama’s ongoing visit, sources disclosed.
The meeting was attended by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her counterpart in the Rajya Sabha Mr Arun Jaitley, senior leaders Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha and M.M. Joshi. In the two-hour meeting, the party leaders firmed up BJP’s stand when Ms Swaraj calls on the US President on Monday.
Sources said while Mr Advani and Mr Jaitley have been invited to the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his official residence, Ms Swaraj would attend the banquet at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.
Sources disclosed Ms Swaraj is likely to raise the issue of terrorism emanating from Pakistan and the US’ ”protectionist” attitude towards India and other Third World countries.
