BJP slams govt ‘contradictions’
Rubbishing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s remarks that the Opposition is trying to destabilise the government, the BJP on Wednesday said the government will collapse under its own contradictions. Accusing the PM
of “distancing himself from the ground realities” and “living in a denial mode” in context to the 2G spectrum scam, the party insisted it does not want mid-term polls but if such a situation arisis, it will be “because of their (government) doing not our asking for it.” The party has sharpened its attack on the PM and home minister P .Chidambaram after the finance ministry’s note to PMO on the 2G issue surfaced.
Attacking PM for “shielding tainted minister,” BJP said Mr Chidambaram is as culpable as A. Raja (former telecom minister) in the 2G spectrum scam.
“It would have been better if he (PM) had protected national interest than tainted ministers,” said Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley.
Maintaining that the PM is following a “unique” coalition dharma, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Ms Sushma Swaraj said while allies are being “fixed” for the same crime, own party leaders are being protected, referring to the latest developments in the 2G case including the note.
Demanding Mr Chidambaram resignation in the wake of 2G note, the BJP leaders said “the last word has not been said on 2G” and the “2G saga is continuing”.
“The finance ministry’s note shows clearly para by para that the then finance minister (P. Chidambaram) not only had the knowledge but it had his approval as well,” Mr Swaraj said. She asked PM to put his house in order rather than blaming the Opposition.
Ms Swaraj said PM should keep his promise made on May 22, 2011 when UPA-II government completed two years in office, of fighting graft and “allow heads to roll”. She charged that the CBI was singing the PM’s tune and stating without investigations that Mr Chidambaram is not guilty.
On the mid-term poll issue, Mr Jaitley said “We do not have the numbers to destabilise the government. There is a crisis of leadership and a crisis of credibility in the government.”
Meanwhile, the BJP denied there was bad blood among its top brass for becoming the party’s PM candidate. It said the decision would be made at the “right time” by the Parliamentary Board, its highest decision-making body.
