BJP split over party president post
New Delhi: Soon after the elevation of Rahul Gandhi as Vice President of the Congress party, the BJP went into a tizzy with chances of Nitin Gadkari getting a second consecutive term as party president dimming.
According to TV reports, senior party leader L K Advani suggested the name of Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj as the next party president. Reports suggested that former party president Rajnath Singh was also in the race.
Even as fissures appeared in the party, senior RSS leaders had a meeting with Advani and reportedly tried to iron out a consensus. BJP sources said RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat spoke to Advani today and is understood to have discussed the party Presidential poll.
The party will issue a notification tomorrow for its presidential elections and Gadkari is also expected to submit his nomination for the top organisational post.
There has been growing demand within BJP that the leadership issue be sorted out soon as Lok Sabha elections are due next year.
Gadkari has been facing corruption charges and rebellion within BJP.
